Why We Created Charge Up!

Some community problems are easy to spot—broken playground equipment, a leaking roof, or ripped carpet. They catch our attention because they are visible.

Hunger, however, hides in plain sight. It sits quietly in the back of the classroom. It looks like a student struggling to focus on math, a child growing frustrated, or tears over a simple assignment. Sometimes hunger doesn’t announce itself at all. That is exactly why we created Charge Up!

The Hidden Need in Our Neighborhoods

When people think of food insecurity, they often picture communities somewhere else. Yet hunger exists right here in our neighborhoods.

• The Reality: Nearly 1,900 of the 8,200 students in Northwest Allen County Schools (NACS) utilize the free or reduced lunch program. That is almost one in four students in our district.

• The Barrier: According to the Parkview Community Data Hub, in some NACS zip codes, greater than 80% of eligible NACS families are not accessing SNAP benefits. Applications can be confusing or overwhelming, and pride or stigma often stand in the way.

• The Gap: Because our district falls into a middle ground socioeconomically, we do not qualify for many federal programs designed to provide supplemental school snacks.

  
  

When federal systems cannot fill a gap, communities must.

Coming to School Hungry

We all know what true hunger feels like—the kind that steals your patience and makes it difficult to think clearly.

Even as adults, hunger can leave us short on patience. Tempers flare more easily, and we find ourselves snapping at coworkers, children, or family members despite knowing better.

Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re feeling. The student melting down during math may not be defiant or inattentive. They may simply need a snack. Because when your body is desperate for fuel, fractions can feel like torture.

Relieving the Burden on Teachers

For years, educators have quietly stepped in to fill this need—stocking desk drawers with granola bars purchased with their own money. While generous, this shouldn't be their burden to bear.

Charge Up! replaces makeshift setups with a sustainable, dignified system. Teachers can now discreetly provide a healthy snack to any student who needs one, on any day, for any reason—no questions asked, no stigma attached.

More Than a Snack

Meeting a basic nutritional need creates the space required for learning to happen. Research consistently shows that when students are fed:

• Attendance improves, which is the strongest predictor of long-term academic success.

• Focus and emotional regulation increase, leading to better memory retention and fewer behavioral disruptions.

• Students spend less energy surviving and more energy growing.

Neighbors Loving Neighbors

Ultimately, Charge Up! is about communities investing in children whose futures matter. Our neighbors’ children are our children. Their struggles are our opportunity to step in.

Hunger should never be the reason a student falls behind. Every child deserves to walk into a classroom with a full stomach, a clear mind, and every opportunity to succeed.
